USANA Biz Centre: 5 Tips for Building Your Business Network

Many people wonder if it's possible to earn a viable living through running your own network marketing business. Not only is it possible, thousands of USANA Associates all over the world enjoy a better lifestyle thanks to their business. How do they do it?

The key to network marketing is reaching a wide network of interested customers. How do you find those people? Our expert USANA Associates share some tips:

Tip 1: Team up with other home-business owners selling products that cater to a similar niche market – for example, skincare products or fitness machines. By organizing joint events, you all broaden your networks.

Tip 2: Even though it's not as lucrative as other forms of marketing, many USANA Associates run successful online direct selling websites and blogs. Some use them as a base for their network to find out about new products, special deals and promotions, and to spread the word on social networking sites.

Tip 3: You can also generate revenue online by teaching direct selling techniques to recent recruits, usually through seminars or your website. Teaching network marketing techniques can be a lucrative side income for your business.

Tip 4: Invite your top twenty customers to a special event and giving them a 10% discount for every friend they bring, up to 30% (three friends). Between the products, your awesome sales pitch, and your customers raving about the products, those friends will soon become regular customers.

Tip 5: Leverage Holidays. Christmas, Valentines Day, Mothers and Fathers Day and specific local celebrations are excellent opportunities to host a seasonal event. Gather your favourite customers for a little holiday celebration. Good food, good drink, good company and the need to finish the present shopping put customers in the mood to buy.

Be friendly and sociable. The key to increasing your network is introducing yourself to people, showing your products, listening to their stories and making them feel welcome. Network marketing isn't a place for wallflowers and shrinking violets. You have to be bold, brave and willing to take a risk.

Follow these tips and you too could be one of USANA top Associates. If you haven’t yet signed up for our business opportunity, you could be running your own successful home business.

Earth Hour – Doing your bit for the environment

Every year we see Earth Hour being observed across the world but how did it all start?

Did you know Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change? Earth Hour is organized by WWF. With almost 5 million supporters and a global network in over 100 countries/territories, it’s one of the world's largest and most respected independent conservation organizations.

In 2008, Earth Hour had become a global movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries/territories participating. Global landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, CN Tower in Toronto, Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and Rome’s Colosseum, had their lights switched off in support of this movement.

Last year, on Saturday 27 March, Earth Hour 2010 became the biggest Earth Hour ever. A record 128 countries and territories joined the global display of climate action. Iconic buildings and landmarks from Asia Pacific to Europe and Africa to the Americas switched off their lights and stood as one in their mission to raise awareness of for the planet.

Earth Hour 2011 will take place tomorrow on Saturday 26 March at 8.30PM (local time). USANA will be switching off its lights during this time. What will you be doing to support the planet this year beyond the 60 minutes?

USANA Health Centre: Keeping Fit At the Office

It’s only in recent history that a typical workday consists of nothing but sitting for eight hours. Prior to the industrial revolution, most work involved farming, agriculture, or other labour. Even shop owners would be rushing back and forth through a busy market, lifting merchandise and making deliveries.

But since the rise of the factory and the computer, your typical workday probably involves leaving your house, sitting in a vehicle, arriving at your workplace, sitting for eight hours, and then sitting in your vehicle to get home again.

This sedentary lifestyle leaves you feeling lethargic, run-down, and incapable of doing anything remotely active. Instead of cooking your favourite meal or playing a game of soccer with your kids, all you want to do is sit in front of the telly.

Performing office exercises at your desk and on your breaks can revitalize your underused, underdeveloped muscles, and increase your energy levels. You’ll feel more alert, and your posture and energy levels will improve. Exercising at your desk provides relief from sedentary habits for anyone who can’t get leave their work to exercise.

Is there a park or courtyard near your office? You could eat your lunch there and spend twenty minutes strolling through the park. Perhaps you could try the coffee shop three blocks over instead of the one across the street? Who knows – their coffee might even taste better.

Did you know certain foods help your brain function at it’s best? It’s true – certain foods provide your body with the fuel it needs to function, while other foods feed the brain. Stocking up on foods like tomatoes, avocado, berries, salmon and leafy green vegetables during the day can improve your productivity and increase your brainpower:

Suggest your colleagues have a "walk and talk" meeting, where you wander around the neighbourhood together bouncing ideas off each other. This might be met with resistance by some colleagues, but keep explaining how having your meetings on the go can help their health and productivity. Getting out into the fresh air helps stimulate your brain and may result in some radical new ideas.

If your office doesn't foster a healthy, active culture, it's time you created one. Spearhead a committee of employees to brainstorm ideas to promote company-wide health schemes. You can organize events, facilitate a “fresh fruit” delivery every week, replace vending machines with healthy snacks, and create a workplace culture of health, wealth and well being.

John Amundsen, We Will Always Remember You!

John Amundsen's story came originally as a letter from USANA New Zealand Associates, David Payne and Sheryl Wickham. We'd love to share it with you:

"
John Amundsen......

A man who was known by just a few................but known by many by what he did.

Born 17-01-1943....passed away 28-12-2010

You see the first person to conceive the idea of regular health talks by the Doctor(s) in USANA in New Zealand was John Amundsen. He and David Payne were talking one day and he suggested we hold monthly Health talks using the wonderful Salus Health facilities built by the Doctors Lewis and other parties in Auckland. Then to engage USANA Associate Milton Berking and Dr. Gerald Lewis to speak.

So that is exactly what we did. We still have the original promotional poster for the first of these events in 2001! This event was held in a room that was capable of holding about 50 people comfortably. Almost instantly we had 100 people packing into the room with standing room only. Talk about a successful idea come to fruition.

Pictured above: the original promotional poster

John was always there helping set up any events the team was putting on. He was actively involved with the “Movin' on Up” events largely behind the scenes.

I think there are many, many John Amundsens within USANA. People whose greatest activity is using the products and telling other people about their experiences. As a jogger and a heart surgery success story, John was always looking to manage his Cholesterol levels and his general fitness. A fan of the products in general his favourites were the Essentials and Optomega, the vegetable oil version of the Biomega capsules of today.

John worked for many years in the Insurance industry. He has two daughters who both have children of their own. He had a passion for things Scottish including membership of the Auckland Highland Pipe Band and was a member of The Greater Banded Wyandotte Soc.of NZ, a fun group.
USANA's Associate, John Amundsen with his grand children

While never a superstar in the normal sense, John was a change-maker through his original idea of health talks which Dr. Monica and Gerald Lewis have taken to even greater heights now ten years later.

What a fine legacy to have left us all.

USANA Skin Care Centre: Looking After Your Skin During Autumn

Dry skin, weather damage, pimples and irritation … autumn can wreck havoc on your skin. We want you to look and feel your best over autumn, so here are some tips for looking after your skin:

Drink Plenty of Water: Your skin dries out quicker over autumn, so drinking at least 1.5 litres of water each day helps to keep it smooth and supple.

Take a vitamin supplement: a healthy body promotes healthy skin. Taking a regular, daily dose of essential vitamins like the USANA Essentials will keep your skin fresh and glowing. Antioxidants such as beta carotene, vitamins C and E are particularly useful in fighting off the effects of ageing and dry skin due to oxidative stress.

Moisturise: autumn weather and exposure to indoor heaters and fires causes dry, flaking skin, which isn’t any fun. Choose a light, non-greasy moisturiser like Sensé Daytime Protective Emulsion which you can apply every day.

Enjoy Fresh Produce: The autumn garden abounds with fresh fruits and vegetables, packed with vitamins and antioxidants to fight free radicals and keep your skin glowing. Head down to your local farmers market and pick up some delicious, natural treats.

Exercise: with the weather getting colder, it’s harder to motivate yourself to get out and about. Exercise keeps you (and your skin) fit and healthy, so find yourself a winter activity, like aerobics classes, indoor rock-climbing or basketball.

Limit Sun Exposure: One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming that since the sun is hidden behind a cloud, it can’t harm your skin. You can burn even on a cool day, and sunburn causes all kinds of skin problems, from peeling redness, to premature ageing and skin cancer. Always cover up with sunscreen.

Skin breakouts: With indoor heaters turned up to max, and warm clothing coming out of storage, you may find yourself sweating more. Sweat locks dirt in our pores and produces autumn breakouts. Use Sensé Gentle Daily Cleanser to wash away surface dirt and impurities and wipe your face and body with a clean towel after sweating.

Don’t forget, a healthy body promotes healthy, glowing skin. With a daily supplement like Essentials, an autumn diet rich in fresh fruits and veggies, and Sense skin-care tips, you’re set for the best autumn yet!

Goals and Consequences #2: Embarrass Yourself for not Reaching Your Target

In our previous blog, we mentioned that Carolyn Edwards, one of our New Zealand USANA Ruby Directors, had to deal with the consequences of not achieving her goals - to increase the commitment level to her USANA business. Now, USANA’s Customer Service Manager of USANA Australia and New Zealand, Nikki Stockton, shares her story: Nikki’s goal was to pass Phase I of the DSR program. The consequence if she failed? Nikki was to sing a whole song in front of the entire company at Staff Training!

You might be thinking; Hang on a minute, that’s nothing. I enjoy singing, even in front of a bunch of strangers! But for Nikki? She’s passionate about people, customer service, cooking… but not singing – especially in front of people.

How did Nikki go with the DSR program?

The USANA DSR program is a Distributor Services Representative program. It follows a process in which USANA trains Customer Service Representatives. It has three stages and each stage requires more advanced skills than the previous one. With the assistance of Nikki’s team and her regular reminders of the outcome if she failed to pass the program, Nikki successfully passed DSR I on time!

When USANA staff received an email which pretty much said, No singing from this Customer Service Manager at Staff Training, we were all a little bit disappointed, as we were really hoping to finally hear her ‘lovely’ voice. Alas, not this time! However, we felt happy for her. After all, she had done a wonderful job! It’s experiences like this that enhance the theory of ‘Consequences help to achieve goals’. Now Nikki has decided that she will hold onto this challenge – that is, if she fails DSR II or DSR III she will be singing – how’s that for a consequence?

At USANA we encourage everyone to succeed and like to reward those who do achieve their goals. Nikki was presented with a $100 Spa Voucher for accomplishing the task. Now she is going to enjoy the day of ‘rejuvenation’ at the Spa and recharge herself for the next challenge!

Leave your comment below to show your support to Nikki. If you have a story to tell, please send an email to nancy.wang@au.usana.com.

USANA Biz Centre: Goal-Setting for Your Home Business

The most difficult aspect of running your own home business is finding the motivation to push forward. You become distracted with everyday tasks and the demands of the family, to the detriment of your business.

Setting goals for yourself can help you to stay motivated. But it’s not enough to simply write out some goals and stick them on your fridge or computer. Setting goals for your home business involves planning, thought and follow-through:

Set Realistic Goals

When setting goals for your home-based business, you can’t set your goal as “paying off your mortgage in six months” right off the bat. Start with small goals that are just a little bit out of your comfort zone. Perhaps your goal for the month will be “set up a website” or “contact ten people about my business“.

Achieving a goal gives you a feeling of triumph, and you’ll soon develop the momentum to push on to bigger and bigger goals. (And who knows, paying off your mortgage could be next …)

Give Yourself a Timeframe

Don’t leave your goals open-ended. Set yourself a realistic timeline for each goal, such as “within three months”, “in two weeks time” or “before the end of the year”.

Another good idea is to ensure you can measure the success of a particular goal. If your goal is “setup website”, then the goal is obviously complete when the website is set up. “Sell 1000 units before December” is another trackable goal with a timeline. However, “be a successful network marketer” isn’t a good goal, because you haven’t defined how you plan on measuring your level of success.

Break it down

If you simply write your goals above your computer and stare at them each day, you’ll never achieve any of them. Goals that seem too big and too far in the future get lost in the daily grind. By breaking your goal down into small tasks you complete one at a time, you can take little steps every day towards achieving your business goals.

By setting realistic, trackable goals and breaking them down into action steps, each day will bring you closer to home business freedom.

If you want to break free of the daily grind and experience the joy and freedom of running your own business, USANA has a business opportunity for you.

A Helping Hand for Christchurch

‘The difference between a helping hand and an outstretched palm is a twist of the wrist…’ Laurence Learner, Author, King of the Night.

In times of dire need every little gesture counts, as Christchurch residents are now realising following the earthquake that demolished their city centre. The outpouring of goodwill from all parts of New Zealand as well as the world has been heartwarming and inspiring. The latest gesture has literally ‘turned on a tap’ of support for Canterbury residents in the form of mobile shower units provided by Kohler New Zealand Limited, bringing long-awaited hot showers to residents in Canterbury from March 7.

USANA Health Sciences is one of the sponsors of the showering products, donating over 2000 Sensé body care packs with more to arrive shortly. USANA has also donated 500 Nutrition bars to the Salvation Army ground crew to support their relief efforts.

Marissa Penfold, Business Manager & Nic Wood, Operations Manager, USANA New Zealand Corp

To further aid relief efforts, when Associates and Preferred Customers place an order from any country where USANA is based, they can select New Zealand Earthquake Relief under the ‘other charitable donations’ tab in the shopping cart and make a contribution - USANA will forward all funds collected to registered charities. (These contributions are not tax deductible).

If you would like to get involved, please visit http://tvnz.co.nz/national-news/donations-canterbury-earthquake-3760332 for more details on how to donate to various organisations.

Let’s all work together to make a difference.

USANA Associate is Jumping to support JDRF! Are You In?

Gabrielle Beaumont, one of our USANA Independent Associates from Norfolk Island, never stops chasing her dreams. After successfully doubling the sales amount in just one month for her USANA business, she continues to push her limit jumping out of a perfectly good plane in South Australia next month and raise funds for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation).

The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for type I (or juvenile) diabetes and its complications through the support of medical research. As a Type I Diabetic herself, Gaby’s dream is a healthy world free from Diabetes! So she is committed to contribute as much as she can to make the dream come true.

Gabrielle has set up a fund raising web page and her goal is to raise $5,000 by getting 5,000 people to donate a $1 each.

Gabrielle with her USANA Rev3

On the day of skydiving, Gaby is going to take her favourite USANA Rev3, so she is pumped for this jump! Gaby’s another “secret” mission is to educate people about healthy energy options and share the REVolution with her peers. She reckons with its cleaner, smarter, and stronger benefits, Rev3 is a great alternative to those normal crash-and-burn energy drinks.

This venture is open to public, so if you want to jump with her, put your hands up!
