Healthier Every Day The USANA Way

“To keep the body in good health is a duty... otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear. " - Buddha

Healthy Living is about taking responsibility and making smart health choices for today and for the future. Eating right, getting physically fit, emotional wellness, spiritual wellness and prevention are all a part of creating a healthy lifestyle.

It's a brand new year with a chance for you to start and commit to a healthier lifestyle.

2011 is the time to…

  • Exercise regularly: the benefits of being fit and staying within your recommended weight range are endless. You'll not only look and feel healthy, but your mental health will benefit too.
  • Eat smaller, regular meals including breakfast.
  • Detox your lifestyle: Natural, organic and eco-friendly products are all the rage at the moment - and rightly so! They'll not only help your health but help mother earth stay happy and healthy too

The Right Nutrition

Importance of Breakfast

If you're skipping breakfast to lose weight, you might want to re-think your weight management program. A satisfying breakfast can help prevent over-eating later in the day. But breakfast isn't the only meal you need to eat – lunch and dinner are also essential. This is because skipping meals tricks your body into thinking it's heading into a starvation period, causing your metabolism to slow down. When your metabolism is slower, your body burns fewer kilojoules and holds on to any fat reserves.

Eating smaller, regular meals throughout the day helps to ensure your body is burning energy efficiently (that is, converting more kilojoules into energy that you can use throughout the day), and not storing fat.

The Right Exercise

Do we really need to exercise? Sometimes even the thought of it seems hard especially after a long day at work. The truth is that you'll be a healthier person for it and not just in terms of cardiovascular fitness. As an active person, you're also less likely to develop certain diseases.

Sitting at work: a health hazard

Many of us spend many hours of our day sitting, especially when we're at work. If we're not glued to a computer screen or tethered to a phone, then we're stuck in seats around tables in meetings. And that's on top of the hours we spend sitting in cars, buses or trains getting to and from work.

There's evidence the typical office worker is sedentary for 75 per cent of their working day. From research conducted over the past decade, it's become clear this affects our body's processing of fats and sugars in ways that increase our risk of heart disease and diabetes.

The key is to avoid sitting as much as possible or at least break up your sitting time – even if only by standing, which uses more muscles than sitting:

  • Standing when you use your phone (or use a cordless handset or headset so you can move around even more)
  • Moving your rubbish bin/printer further away from your desk so you need to get off your chair to access them
  • Taking the stairs instead of the lifts between floors
  • Walking to a colleague to talk to them instead of sending an email
  • Getting up to move around for few minutes or so every hour
  • Doing household chores like ironing or folding the washing while watching TV
  • Standing to watching children's sporting activities.

How much exercise do you need?

Even moderate exercise such as regular walking or climbing the stairs can be protective no matter how late in life you start.

One thing experts agree on is that your exercise, at the very least, has to be moderately intense and has to be regular. The National Physical Activity Guidelines for Australians recommends at a minimum 30 minutes of moderate physical activity – like walking – on most days of the week. How do you know if you're being moderately active? A good test is to see if you can talk easily while you're exercising. If you can, you are exercising at a light to moderate level. Once your breathing makes it too hard to talk, you know you've increased the intensity of your workout!

Set a goal to incorporate little changes into your lifestyle and the time to start is NOW! your body will thank you for it!

USANA Tips: Digestive Health at Christmas

It's the festive season - a time for indulgences! Calendars fill up with plans for parties and festivities. Food and alcohol are the hardest to resist, but can be the cause for many nasties in your digestive system.

Good liver function is important so your body can normally detoxify and process the food and drink you consume. Do you have a plan to support your liver health this season?

A few pointers from USANA to help you this Christmas season...

  • Minimise your alcohol consumption.
  • Take milk thistle - a herb that has been used for centuries to support liver health.
  • Drink a lot of water to prevent dehydration
  • Try N-acetyl-Cysteine , which is the precursor to glutathione in the body. Glutathione plays a central role in neutralizing free radicals.
  • Consume food which is rich in Vitamin C and Vitamin B before going out, to give your body a substantial antioxidant boost.
  • Choose your food wisely: skip acid-strong foods such as coffee, pop, chocolate, alcohol and black tea, and eliminate fried foods.
  • Consider trying some vegetarian meals. Meat is often the most difficult food to digest.
  • Allow sufficient time to eat your food and to allow your food to digest. This will help your digestion process
  • Be stress-free during your meal. Avoid be upset, hurried or argumentative.

Follow these few tips to manage liver health during this festive season. Support your liver with a good liver tonic, such as USANA's New! HepaPlus, which employs Nutritional Hybrid Technology, providing you a superior formulation in a bi-layer tablet. Your liver will love you for it! USANA Stands Side by Side on the Growth of the Next Generation

Our USANA New Zealand Associates, Karen Ovens, Mandy Beverley, Lisa Kissen and Ali Kiss spent an amazing Sunday by supporting the Kids Try-athalon event at Westmere primary school in Auckland.

The school’s goal was to promote health and fitness in a fun, supportive community environment. The focus was on children taking part and doing their best, rather than winning, as they wanted to encourage as many kids as possible to have a go – as well as parents getting involved too – and having lots of fun in the process.

Karen told us, “It’s great to see lots of happy smiling children with parents and teachers having fun and our own USANA Associate and Champion Marathon Runner Allison Roe running with the kids.” They shared the USANA Nutrimeal Shakes, Nutrition Bars and the Rev3 and the kids absolutely loved the Bars!

The event was a fund raiser for a school hall and will now become an annual event possibly involving 3 other Primary Schools in the area! Thank you Karen, Mandy, Lisa and Ali for actively fostering a lifelong enjoyment of exercise and its associated health benefits.

Associates and Staff alike were very happy to meet Brent, ‘We all enjoyed Brent’s company. It was inspiring to listen to his goals and dreams and how USANA is supporting him on this journey’.

Brent was interviewed by General Manager, USANA Australia & New Zealand, Gill Stapleton and talked about the importance of good nutrition as part of his training and fitness program and his confidence in USANA products
.

Q: What USANA products are you taking and why?

A: My favourite USANA products are the HealthPak, Rev3, CoQuinone 100, Chocolate Fusion Nutrition Bars and Biomega III. I trust the quality of the products and have confidence that I am getting nutrition that I would otherwise be missing out on.

Q: How did you find the USANA Nutritional supplements helped you at Commonwealth Games?

A: The competition comprised of a very tight schedule of training and competing. I have confidence while training and knowing that I can push my body to the limit and still be able to recover the next morning, ready to compete ’.

Q: How do you maintain a healthy lifestyle?

A: A big part of competing is being supple enough to withstand the physical rigours, so stretching is vital – along with a healthy diet. I also see a physiotherapist twice a week for regular checkups, and gets acupuncture when needed. My body is my job, If it’s not working, then I’m not working. If I’m eating well, then I’m training well.

Q: Winning a medal takes persistence and determination. How did you stay focused on that goal for so long?

A: It’s a mental challenge, With life in general, there are so many things that pop up and you have to stay on track, not over-commit and do what you do properly.”

Brent signed autographs and posed for photographs on the day. Not only is he a stellar athlete, he is also a nice guy. We loved having you visit us Brent, and look forward to seeing more great things from this young athlete who now has his sights set firmly on winning Gold at the World Championships in 2011 and London Olympics in 2012. USANA is with you all the way!
